Man Loses Life Savings To Termites

A man in India has lost his life savings after a termite infestation at the bank ate into his safe deposit box and chewed up currency and investment notes worth hundreds of thousands of rupees.

The bank says the man is just out of luck because they put up a notice warning customers of the termite problem. The thing is, the man had not been to the bank in months and didn't see the sign. I know they have phones in India.. why didn't they call him?

The items in the safe deposit box were his entire savings for retirement. He had deposited approximately $11,000 in currency and investment papers worth $5660. He also had some jewelry in the box.

He started using the safe deposit box in September 2005 and when he opened the box on January 29 he found dust instead of his money and the investment papers were badly damaged. The man says that the termites even ate the sheen off of the jewelry he had in storage at the bank.

The man has written a letter to the bank's central offices, but has not gotten a reply. The local bank says that because they put up the sign, they are not liable for the losses.
